BeerThe research group at the University of Extremadura (UEX) in Spain “Metabolic Bone Diseases” published a study on the beneficial effects it has moderate beer intake on bone quality in women in the journal ‘Nutrition’.

Researchers Juan Diego Pedrera Zamorano, Jesús María Lavado García, Raúl Martín Roncero, Julian Garcia Calderon Fernando, Trinidad Rodriguez Dominguez and Maria Luz Canal Macías have published a study on 1697 healthy women of the province of Cáceres, in particular, 710 premenopausal, 176 in perimenopause (the time period leading to menopause) and 811 postmenopausal.

The values on the quality of the bone marrow were analyzed by densitometry of the phalanges, which measures bone mass. The results showed that beer drinkers had higher bone mass at the phalanx than non-drinkers, UEx reported in press release.

For this positive effect, consumption should be done in the daily diet through a prolonged period. At this point, the coordinator of Juan Diego Pedrera, which affects the line between moderate alcohol intake and abuse is very thin, and that any excess involves damage in the bone structure of the human body and can cause serious health problems.

Beer is a common component in the Mediterranean diet and beneficial due to its phytoestrogen content among others, and silicon. Phytoestrogens have a high estrogenic activity and has been shown to protect bone and silicon produces beneficial effects on skeletal health. The optimal effect on bone may be caused by the synergistic effect of combining these components.
